       My HP MediaSmart died a horrible death two weeks ago (probably a mainboard issue...drives were fine), and after a bunch of research, I settled on the DS413 as a replacement. What a revelation! The setup experience was incredibly smooth by comparison with WHS, which I had really liked. The only thing I really miss from WHS is the backup, but I've settled on Acronis TrueImage, and that seems to be working fine.
      I've installed CrashPlan on the DS413 (pretty solid explanation of concepts and implementation here:[...]). I was able to "adopt" my WHS backup on the CrashPlan cloud servers, and everything synced up perfectly so I didn't have to recreate hundreds of GBs of online backup.
      As I mentioned, setup was ultra-smooth. I took the drives I'd had in the HP server, dropped them in the DS413, let it create a Synology Hybrid RAID volume (only 2 of the 4 drives are alike), and I was off and running. There was nothing to the setup...just point your browser to the web address in the 1 page setup doc and go.
      I'm amazed at how cool this thing runs. My drives stuggled to stay below 42 degress C in the MediaSmart. In the Synology, the same drives have never gotten above 30 degrees C. And it's way quieter.
      While this was not really a priority for me, there are pretty nice apps for streaming music and video. The free iPhone apps that connect to same are also solid, intuitive and usable.

So far so good. I wish I'd made this move sooner!

     ***UPDATE***: A couple of months out from the initial install, and I'm waaaay happier with this than I was with WHS. I upgraded one drive in the hybrid RAID with a larger capacity drive. It's not a hot-swap, so the system was down for 10 minutes while I swapped the drives. The RAID rebuilt flawlessly, and the system was completely accessible and usable during the rebuild process (took over 12 hours) with no apparent degradation in performance. CrashPlan continues to work great. I have installed Serviio as a DLNA server, which is working fine, with the exception of transcoding video...there is just not enough horsepower on the box to be able to transcode on the fly...small complaint, but important if this is your goal. Have completed my first DSM (the Synolog NAS OS) upgrade smoothly, and Synology has updated mobile apps and server packages several times since my purchase, so very happy with support on the platform.

        I am a long time IT veteran and have been around these types of devices for over a decade. I have got to say so far I am thoroughly impressed with this device. It was so simple to set-up I am convinced my 7 year old could do it without any help. For the money, I don't see anything comparative. The only thing I can think of it the Drobo line, but these are less expensive for sure.
       Get one of these with 2 3TB drives and you will have all of the back-up storage you need with the piece of mind that a mirrored drive provides.       Watch the recommendations that Amazon make on this. I took their recommendation without paying attention and ended up ordering a 2 TB drive and a 3 TB drive, which in a mirrored disk system you are wasting a terabyte.
       For you techies it will let you present an iscsi LUN to your desktop which is a very cool feature that some of the big boy SAN's have.  Overall great product for the price... so far only two weeks into it......Works great for the money

     Best storage solution for home:I have been using Synology DS210j for about 3 years growing volume from 500 GB to 1.5 TB.I was in need of expanding the volume, so I was waiting for their 4-bay soho series renewal.That's why I bought this DS413 as soon as it was available.
And it is really great! I like new design. And now I have 9 TB volume with 1-disk fault tolerance! (I put 4x3TB drives inside)This amount is more than enough for two macbook's time machine's backups, family photo&video archive, downloaded files... etc.But the main reason of buying Synology is their software: SHR - synology hybrid raid gives you 1-2 disk fault tolerance with ability to upgrade drives one by one without moving the data; their DynDNS service with heartbeat option alerts you when your storage gets disconnected from internet; CloudStation - your personal drobpox; Photo Station is nice to share photo and video with the family; Audio Station - all your music in the cloud; Media Server - DNLA to watch video stored in DS from TV menu; Surveillance Station - your IP-cameras hub; Package Center - install more software with a single click; iOS applications and push notifications. I'm using all these features but there is much more.For the past 3 years I had not a single problem with synology software - everything is working as described.
